The Department of Fine Art was under the school of Art and Printing, established in 1952 as a unit under the then Yaba Technical Institute. The early products of the School specialized in Painting and Sculpture.The present Department of Fine Art under the school of Art, Design and Printing was formally established in 1981, and offers courses that do lead to the award of ND General Art as well as programm for the award of HND in Painting and Sculpture respectively.
Over the years yabatech art students have been known to be argue-ably the best in nigeria and africa as a whole. today in one of there real-life outdoor painting we see the students trying to capture the image of a building within the school premises.
En plein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ], French for outdoors, or plein air painting) is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look.
Out of them all a particular painting caught my attention,done by salami ibrahim “even if i no nothing about art” i liked his choice of color, precision and the neatness of the job.
The Department has some basic facilities at its disposal. There are large studios for the Sculpture and the Painting Classes at the HND level; a Life Drawing Studio and provision of two large studios for the ND classes. A multi purpose workshop for Wood Metal Works is equally available in the Department.
The Department has the benefit of qualified and highly experienced staff. In the past, the department had some great Artists like Mr. Paul Mount, Professor Y. A. Grillo, Messrs Y.A.G. Lawal, I.A. Osunde, Tolu Filani and Kolade Oshinowo amongst others.there is also a team of non-academic staff which includes some male and female models, craftsmen, technicians and other hands.
